Walking and Hiking Trails
LOESS BLUFF HIKING TRAIL
1/4 mile long trail. This trail was built by the civilian conservation corps
in the late 1930's. It begins at the refuge visitor contact station, weaving
through woodlands and ending on top of the bluff. The last portion of the trail
is a strenous climb rising about 200 feet in elevation. The end of the trail
offers a good view of the refuge wetlands, and on a clear day you can see White
Cloud, KS. There is an interpretive leaflet available in the visitor contact
station.
CALLOW MEMORIAL TRAIL
1/4 mile trail on an asphalt surface (old Highway 159). Handicap Accessible.
This trail goes along the base of the wooded bluffs and ends at the base of
recently restored warm season native grasses. This trail was dedicated to
former Squaw Creek Assistant Refuge Manager James Michael Callow who was
killed in an airplane accident in Oregon. There are several benches and
interpretive signs along the trail.
EAGLE OVERLOOK HIKING TRAIL
3/4 mile long trail. A grass trail along a dike separating Eagle and Pelican
Pools. The walking surface is flat. The trail ends at a 10-foot observation
tower which gives a commanding view of Eagle and Pelican Polls. This trail
is popular during the spring and fall migrations when large numbers of
waterfowl can be seen from the trail. There are no interpretive signs or
materials for this trail.
